Economic Development: Transforming Plainfield (2021-2025)

Under Mayor Adrian O. Mapp’s leadership, Plainfield has experienced an unprecedented surge in economic development, bringing new opportunities, jobs, and businesses to our community. Our commitment to growth and progress has resulted in:

Over $1 Billion in New Investments

Plainfield is experiencing a development boom. Multiple projects are in various stages of completion, totaling more than $1 billion in investments that will transform the city’s landscape.

Expanding Housing Options

Once completed, these developments will introduce more than  6,000 new housing units, including:

• Single-family and two-family homes
• Townhomes for sale
• Modern apartment units with upscale amenities

A Thriving Business Community

These projects will also create at least  600,000 square feet of new commercial and retail space  in the Queen City, ensuring residents have greater access to goods, services, and entertainment.

Job Creation & Workforce Development

• 2,000+ temporary construction jobs  created throughout the development phases.
• 200+ jobs   generated in the rapidly expanding cannabis industry.
• 100-150 permanent jobs created through new business ventures.

Business & Entrepreneurial Support

Hosted nearly  100 expos and workshops  to educate and empower local entrepreneurs and business owners. Topics included:

• First-time homebuyer education
• Workforce development
• Business planning and financial management
• Legal guidance for entrepreneurs
• Small business funding strategies

Organized approximately  50 networking events and business forums, connecting local businesses and fostering collaboration to strengthen the city’s economy.

Small Business Growth & Investment

Nearly  200 new small and large businesses  have launched or relocated to Plainfield since 2021.

The City has forged strategic partnerships with:

• New Jersey Redevelopment Authority (NJRA)
• New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA)
• Kean University
• Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC)
• Other private lenders and organizations to support Plainfield’s business community.

Skilled Trade & Workforce Development Initiatives

Partnered with  minority-owned General Construction Contractors  to establish the  Plainfield Workforce Development Cooperative, providing training in carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, and mechanical trades.

Supporting Small Businesses with Storefront Improvements

Through the  Sign & Façade Grant Program, over  three dozen businesses  have received funding for storefront enhancements, including:

• New signage and canopies
• Window replacements
• Security gate removals

Plainfield’s economic transformation is well underway, and we remain committed to  building a stronger, more prosperous future for all residents.
